GRADING POLICY

The band grades will be determined by playing points, attendance, and attitude. Students will be graded on tone quality, posture, hand position, range, and technique when they play exercises involving fundamentals of music such as scales, rhythm, etc.  Concert music points will be awarded based on tempo, dynamics, and expression.  Final grades for each quarter will be determined by grade points, attendance at rehearsals and concerts, progress, and student attitude.  Extra credit points will be offered occasionally during the year for various activities.  A student’s grade may be lowered significantly for not being prepared with music, materials, pencil, etc.

The percentages for the band grades are as follows:

PLAYING POINTS  (50%)

Students will be given a checklist of exercises, scales, and rhythm.  They will work towards earning as many points as possible during each quarter.  Items on the checklist are worth between 5-20 points; the student will decide which items to attempt at each lesson.  Every player will have a 2-minute time limit to complete as many items  as possible; therefore, it is highly recommended that the student practice at home in order to be ready to earn points at their lesson.  The point totals for an A, B, C, D, or F will be determined by the director, and will be different for the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade band.

PERFORMANCE ATTENDANCE  (25%)

Attendance at every concert / performance is required.  Unexcused absences will significantly lower the student’s performance attendance grade.  It is highly recommended that all concert dates are marked on your calendar at the beginning of the school year.  Any changes to the band calendar will be communicated as soon as they are known.

REHEARSAL PARTICIPATION  (15%)

Every student is expected to actively participate during class and to have his/her instrument, music, and materials for each class.  Students who forget their instrument, music, etc. on a regular basis will receive a “0” for each day they do not play in class.

DIRECTOR EVALUATION  (10%)

Each band student will be evaluated by the director in the areas of punctuality, effort, attitude, cooperation, attention, and progress.  This grade is not determined by musical talent or playing ability.  It is a reward for students who display hard work and consistent effort during band, regardless of their talent level.
